My journey in photography began in high school. As a young black teen, growing up in Los Angeles was always hard, I looked for any creative outlook I could find in order to express myself. It was always a challenge being able to have the right environment to do so, I attempted to use the resources my school offered, but was criminalized for my art and expression and ultimately expelled. My creative freedom felt violated, the staff and administration at the school all criminalized my actions and would constantly pull me out of class to sit down and have discussions on what I was doing. Things proceeded on as I did not wish to be silenced but once the administration knew they couldn’t put a stop to it they involved law enforcement where I was arrested in my graphic design class and brought home to where my house was being searched by the police in such a behavior that felt like a raid. This encounter was hamulating for myself and I couldn’t bare to be seen by others for a while. I reflected and realized this was my first major encounter with the discrimination many other colored artists face and ultimately it shifted my direction and now deepened my drive and commitment to pave the path that I want to follow all my life.
I reflected on this experience time and time again for a while and realized this was my first major encounter with the discrimination many other colored artists face and ultimately it shifted my direction and now deepened my drive and commitment to pave the path that I want to follow all my life.
I am a 22 year old high school drop out seeking things in life that give it more meaning, and to passionately display my feelings in my art. Photography is something I fell in love with at the age of 17 and will forever love it and cherish it for being able to help me express emotions I otherwise couldn’t. I strive to always create something that gives the consumer something they can relate to or create a story from. My only goal in life is to live one that I can say I’m happy to have lived, and with my camera by my side I’m happy I can always capture the moments, people, and places in life that made me the happiest.
